Battle Scars

Do you remember getting that first hole in your beloved pair of Chucks? Battle scars I like to call them. My current Chucks (aka my Daily Driver Chucks) got their first tear at an Against Me! concert in Bloomington Illinois. I specifically remembered that night, not only because the pit severely brutalized my Chucks but because my friends and I got into a heated debate with another concert goer whether PF Flyers or Chucks were more original. I think we know how that one turned out.

Since then, my daily drivers have been pretty beat up but they are still holding up strong. I think that I have a unique story for each pair of Chucks that I own, all starting with the first little rip.

Chuck Taylor All Star Jeff

My name is Jeff. I grew up in Chicago. I now live in Nashville, TN, where I’m a songwriter and record producer. I like good coffee, great restaurants, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, anything F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, and the Beatles. I like all that. However, I am madly in love with my Converse Chuck Taylor shoes.

Right now, I own 5 pairs that I rotate between. I want 7…one for each day of the week. I think I have 3 or 4 additional pairs in “worn too much/beat to death” retirement. I wear them all the time. On stage, in the studio, at a bar, on a date…wherever. If you meet me, there’s a 96.8% chance I’m wearing Chucks. If I’m not, I’m also probably wearing a suit and tie, and wishing I was instead wearing a pair of my favorite shoes.

Chuck Taylor’s are both completely classic and completely modern. They tie you to the past, yet you can still write your own story in them. You want to channel Pistol Pete Maravich on the basketball court in the 60s? Chucks. Are you a Silverlake hipster rocking skinny jeans? Better have Chucks. Want to be hip hop? Yep…Chucks are there too. Are you the introspective songwriter type? You know it…Chucks. Want to find a way to express your own individual fashion ideal within a context our culture has known and loved for 50 years? It’s Chucks.

Just like the guitar, Chucks will never go out of style, they will never not be cool. If you don’t have a pair, slap yourself and get one. If you do have a pair, get another. How many pairs is too many? I don’t even understand that question.

Meanwhile, I’ll be in Nashville trying to write a great song and drinking coffee from Crema. Perhaps I’ll see you there.

Chuckverse.com Celebrity Profile: DJ B-Lord

DJ B-Lord (aka. Middle finger man), the radio, club, and mixtape DJ of South Carolina has acquired an impressive collection of over 50 chuck taylors including several custom pairs. One of his favorites are some Jackass Chucks, and he shows his patriotism with red, white, and blue Obama Chucks. “I live in the clubs….I love to party….and ya damn right…….I love Chuck Taylors” says B-Lord.

Collecting  chucks has become his hobby since playing music became a full time job.  He discovered their charm in 2001 when he was in LA for a video shoot with NC rapper Petey Pablo.  B-Lord admitted “that LA culture kinda rubbed off on me..that’s when i first seen Chuck Taylors everywhere like that” everyone in SC was still rockin Jordons and A1’s back then.

“Chucks just kinda signify a laid back…cool type of lifestyle” says B-Lord.  He points out that the right girl can really pull of the chucked look, but “they ain’t for every girl………only the cool chicks”.

He wears his chucks clean, but they don’t necessarily stay that way, “If my Chucks could talk it would be plenty of crazy stories they would tell…….but they can’t”.  B-Lord’s secrets don’t stop with the stories, when asked about his custom chucks he left us hanging, “Let’s just say I got a great “connect” that helps to keep me fresh with the embroidery” he said.

DJ B-Lord would like to give a special shout out to all his SC folks! “I appreciate and love yall for all the support yall give me!  And thanks to Chuckverse.com for the interview!”
